Past MRR Scholarship Winner: Rachel Benzoni

What local and MRR events did you participate with in the past?

Ha, which ones didn’t I participate in?! My parents were avid supporters of and participants in MRR races when they lived in Sioux City, so whatever one they were doing is probably the one I participated in.

What role has running had on your life?

Running helped me push past a weight loss plateau (I lost about 50 lb in 2012) and maintain that weight loss. In addition, it has given me goals to aim for every year which is far more important than a non-runner might think – I am of the belief that as a collective group, we as runner are moving towards becoming racers, constantly aiming for that PR.

What role does running currently have in your life?

I actually met my current S.O. at a race about 4 years ago! So I would say a pretty big role 😀
But in all seriousness, it allows me to bond with my dog (a handsome husky/aussie mix), my boyfriend, and my friends in something we all enjoy doing. I also use running to work off frustration, anger, and stress.

What did the MRR scholarship assist you with?

It allowed me to buy some pretty expensive textbooks!

What are you doing now?

I have a masters in science education and am a high school chemistry teacher in Omaha. I am also pursuing my doctorate in education at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

Anything else you would like to say?

Friends, careers, and love may come and go, but your running shoes and the road are always there!
